It is time to travel and you have been looking forward to this trip to Las Vegas all year long. Your friend has scheduled a couple of shows, but, is keeping them a secret until you both get there. You know the flight is long coming from the east coast and you cannot wait to hit the runway to get this journey going. You have heard all about the night lights and casinos and then how the town never sleeps. In fact, some say to wear a watch because there is not a clock around to be seen on any of the walls. Building Strength, Your Age Profile and The Perfect Pointe

When I was professionally training and needed pointe shoes, I could choose between Gamba and Freed. Freeds were agonizing for my not so flexible and not quite strong enough feet, and Gambas were much easier to break in for me. Unfortunately, no one told us how to initially break in a shoe so as to enhance our work. I was in a class with some younger girls and they were a year ahead of me in training. I was told that pointe work hurts, and not to complain. I was told that a little Lamb's Wool was ok to put in the shoes, but that the dancer should be able to do pointe without it, and not to complain. No one had help in fitting the shoes, or breaking them in. I went through classes seeing[..]

Three Agent Tips

One of the most common complaints I hear from actors involves finding the right representation. Snagging a solid agent or manager can be tricky, time consuming, and expensive. A lot of actors experience the old catch-22: "I need an agent to get work and I need work to land an agent". What's an actor to do? Whether you feel like you don't have enough time or money to grab the attention of an agent, or you question whether or not you're ready for representation, you can begin planting seeds with prospective agents easily and inexpensively. All you need to do is commit to these small steps. Apply a Laser Beam Focus I'm a big believer in "doing less more often", so narrow your agent list to[..]

If the shoes feel off a bit, there are many ways to make them exactly the right fit. If you check the Dr. Scholls (or some similar foot care brand) area of a store you'll find all kinds of insoles, gel soles, corn and blister pads and other things you can cut up and put in your shoes, or on your toes, to make a pointe shoe fit exactly. In fact, many professional ballerinas customize every pair of shoes that they have. They develop all kinds of tricks to make the shoes enhance their dancing. Heel grips can help the back of your pointe shoe if it seems a little wider than usual, even though the size is the same as a pair you had that was a perfect fit. Gel soles can be cut up and glued[..]

How to Belt With Power

You've seen the stars on stage and TV, belting out tunes with so much power they make the walls shake. They make it look so easy. You can too, if you will believe in yourself and are willing to do what it takes to learn. But you've got to be careful. It's one thing to visualize belting out a tune like Christina Aguilera, but remember, she had to cancel her summer tour in 2004 because of vocal chord strain. And she was lucky. Some stars have lost their voices - and their dreams entirely. If you want to reach your full potential as a singer and enjoy a long, healthy career, then follow this proven system for unleashing your natural singing voice. 1.) Relax. Battement fondu can be done as a melting adagio exercise, or as a crisper faster movement. It is always elastic in quality, as it is designed to develop the thighs for strong jumping. The coordination required in the exercise is needed for the grands sautes such as grand jete en tournant, fouette saute and all the many other jumps found in the solos of classical ballet. Battement fondu develops the quadriceps, or thigh muscles. It's beautifully elastic stretch up from the demi plie, to a full rise onto demi pointe and full leg extension, is a challenge for all the basic technical areas. Magic is a great skill to learn. If you can perform a few magic tricks, people will remember you better because you have a relatively unusual skill. For anybody new to magic, in order to become proficient, it is important that you learn two skills: It is important to learn how to master tricks that involve technical skill, since anybody who wants to do anything more than one or two party tricks is going to have to master the skills of sleight-of-hand in order to progress. It is however, equally or arguable more important that you learn to be comfortable performing in front of an audience since, as a performer, that is your place of work. Many magicians concentrate too much on the first[..]

Do you long for a beautiful, crystal clear voice? This simple technique will show you how to bring your voice forward and out of the throat, giving you that clear, sweet singing voice that you want. Nasal voice placement Before we start this, I want to state that this is an exercise only, to help you gain control of directing your voice, and not intended as a way to sing in public for people! I'm sure that as a child, just fooling around, you put your voice in your nose. Maybe you pretended you were a monkey. Perhaps if you speak French, you can produce a nasal sound easily. So, that is where we want to start, making an "E" sound as nasally as you can. It may feel funny and sound funny.[..]

If you want to learn to dance ballet, start with finding a reputable dance studio. Many dance academies will allow you watch a class if you like. The correct use of your posture, turn out and learning correct placement will help you to build strength and avoid injuries. Even football players learn ballet to prevent sports injuries! Learning the Acoustic Guitar - Good Left Hand Technique

When learning the guitar, left hand technique is half of the job. The clearness or cleanness of your notes depends a lot on how good your technique is. So, if you are a beginner and want beautiful clear, clean chords, these guidelines will give you a good start. Thumb placement Though the thumb is not used in playing notes, it is, however, very important. The thumb serves two purposes. The first purpose is to mark the spot for the hand. Much like a home plate in a ball diamond, once you know where the home plate is, then you know where all the bases are. So, by being meticulous about thumb placement, you ensure that your fingers are accurate at finding their spot. Place the thumb at the[..]

Differentiating Illusionists From Magicians

In the realm of magic, there are two groups of people: illusionists and magicians. Vitelli has distinguished himself as an illusionist because of the nature of his performances. While magicians utilize small props, such as a deck of cards or a coin, illusionists use larger than life elements. An illusionist is not afraid to have an elephant or tiger on stage, and often uses special effects and other innovative techniques. Illusionists are scientists that study how individuals perceive elements. Vitelli has professional experience in the science of illusion. While he uses special effects and props, his illusions are based on extending the possibilities of the human figure. He utilizes a[..]

Ballet is actually the foundation of most western dance forms, since ballet teaches good work habits, and a safe technique that enables the dancers to perform for many years with less chance of injury. The graceful dance moves and combinations of movements in classical choreography are taught nowadays with increasing awareness of movement analysis. Correct ballet moves involve the elements of physics in terms balance, center of gravity, leverage and rotational mechanics among others. The result of accurate ballet training is the ability to balance in a complex position, over a small area and support on the floor. Such as the tiny platform of the pointe shoe. There are many pieces of the puzzle to keep track of in effective ballet training. Hopefully you are taught correct technique in the beginning, as you will develop muscle memory quickly. If not, you will need to unlearn and relearn later. Daily routines done at home need to be rotated around the muscle groups, so as not to create an overtraining mode by accident. For example in an exercise to strengthen your core muscles, you lie on your side, resting your head on the bottom arm. Your legs are straight, not turned out, and your feet are just slightly in front of your hips. Your spine is straight as though you are standing, so your waist is not touching the floor. Be in pointe shoes as much as you can. Once you've gone beyond beginning pointe work, wearing the shoes for barre work is a good habit. The sole of the foot, and ankle, have to work so much more with every tendu, degage, and rise onto demi-pointe. The shoe resists, and the muscles get a better workout. If the thickness of the sole makes your foot wobble because it does not lie flat on the floor, use a wood file, and shave the sole down lightly. You can get the sole close to flush with the satin, so that your foot will be flatter on the floor. Straining the ankles from wobbling is distracting. Even wearing worn out pointe shoes is better than wearing soft shoes. There is still more effort[..]

Building Strength For Strong Pirouettes In Pointe Shoes

Posted by admin
5 stars of 5, 166 votes

With some students, all their pirouettes get thrown off balance. And with others, it is just one side that doesn't work as well. 2 things to observe are: * one side back/hip/leg muscles are weaker than the other side, when it is the supporting side * therefore you are also weaker in your demi plie just before the turn and riseslightly off balance and don't have the exact strength needed to recover justby gripping your position. Here are some more things to examine: When you are standing in fifth position, check to see where youcompensate. Anyone who does not have 180 degree turnout from the hips, compensates. To have the front leg looking turned out, the hips are usually a bit less[..]

Of course, not every sprained ankle is pointe shoe related. Nor does every dance student work well in Gaynor Minden shoes. Good for some, not for others. In ballet, there is a fashion of line in arabesque, of sickling out the working - the raised - foot. It may also be sickled out in devant or a la seconde. The sickle out emphasizes the turned out foot. As long as this never happens to a supporting foot on demi pointe, or pointe, this is fine. Especially for those dancers with hypermobile ankles and feet, they must be careful not to sickle out as they come down from pointe, while rolling through demi pointe. Even when the weight is being transferred from the foot, to the other leg, the[..]

One of the biggest reliefs I had when I went from amateur to professional training was that hips do not have to be square in a derriere (behind you) position. Including doing the splits. I started my training in the R.A.D. system. I had natural turnout. It looked great except when I did a tendu (French word for stretched) derriere. We had to keep our hips square. In more advanced classes the developpe to the back, and attitude positions still looked terribly turned in. Naturally the students would go for height, which opened our hip. Our teacher would correct our hips, placing them back to a square position, and both the height and turnout looked miserable. When I got into classes[..]

I once had a teacher who described it as "technically dishonest" to use or feel the music in any way in order to perform a step better. You mean we should have been able to train with someone just hitting a pencil on a pot lid to keep us working together? Or have a metronome clicking in the studio? This same teacher made sure that her pianist played a battement tendu type of music for jumps - a little plonky, a little pedestrian (though there were pianists who, luckily, could not play without feeling). It seemed that inspiration was a way to cheat. There are dancers who will catch your eye in class, even when they are not the best technical student, and are not among the most physically[..]

Many years ago a friend, a non-dancer, Vone Deporter and I would do yoga together a couple of times a week in the National Ballet School, in the evenings. We would play some relaxing music and do our own routines. Over the weeks, I felt more flexible, slightly, and got good results, experiencing less aches and pains, and overall tension. I used yoga to stretch the ballet way - forcing every position and deep breathing to distract myself from the pain. I thought I was getting into much better positions. Vone, however, did yoga the gentle yoga way. She picked a few yoga positions and stretched comfortably with a stretchy feeling, but no pain. A few weeks later her positions were[..]

Battement frappes is always included in the daily routines of barre work. It is a simple looking but finely detailed movement benefiting both working and supporting leg. Battement frappe imitates the movement of a jump - from a demi plie to a full stretch of the leg and foot. By the strike of the ball of the foot on the floor, there is a quick sharp finish to the movement, like when your feet, then toes, push off the floor in a succession that is almost too quick for the eye to see. The foot then is drawn in quickly to the coupe de pied position - and maybe rapidly taken out and into another coupe de pied position - imitating the rhythm of a battu. This develops the strength in the[..]

It is the running and pivoting team sports that this study addresses. Sprinters and runners go in one direction, and do not have to risk knee rotation. That's why the measurements for the females involved in non-pivoting sports were surprising when compared to females in the pivoting sports. For example, if your class has done adage in the center consisting of develope en croix, and your new level requires a fouette or promenade, you may need to build more strength in your center. Fouette in adage depends on the stability of the supporting side, firstly, then of course, also the working position. To break it down, you could practice an exercise where the you develop devant, turn a quarter turn to face the wall, moving the supporting heel and thigh to a new turned out position, and the working leg coming forward to its proper second position. You could either close here, and develop a la seconde and then turn a quarter turn back to devant, or just keep holding the leg up and[..]

Every grand battement begins with a strong brush into the floor. This challenges the hip placement, the posture, and the feeling of lifting the leg from underneath. The leg does not lift from underneath, that is just a mental trick of elongating the leg, keeping the working hip placed, and lifting the leg (from the top muscles) but without shortening and bunching the thigh muscles. Every battement tendu and degage you have done determines the strength of your grand battement. Your grand battement determines the strength and elegance of your grand allegro. Length is the goal in ballet, and here are some ways to think of it as a realistic goal. Striving for length also creates the elastic quality in your ballet movement that results in a richer texture. For example, when you start a demi plie, you pull up. But to make that an extra pulled up strength, think of bending your knees, maximum turnout, and not lowering your body for a second. That's right, pull up the lower abs so that your belly button moves up your torso and stays there! This is different from pulling in your stomach into a bundled knot. Whether or not you succeed in bending your knees and staying up, you will stretch your lower abs long and flat. To practice, open and close[..]

Travelling in turns usually is a problem of strength holding the postural plumb line. If the position and movement is not correct, the turns will travel and flounder. Here are 7 highly effective tips to examine your technique for fouettes and turns a la seconde: ** Standing sideways to a mirror, do a few press ups in first position. Do you have a postural plumb line? If your core, your turnout, your ankles and soles of the foot are steady, also check to see that these movements are done with no strain in the shoulders and neck. ** With fingertips on the barre, do slow motion press ups and down in retire, or a la seconde. Dancing in pointe shoes should not be painful - uncomfortable sometimes, yes. Getting exactly the right fit is a challenge - knowing how, and finding a ballet store that has a lot of different kinds of shoes to try on. Some ballet stores have excellent shoe fitters and some do not. Some students have one foot that is longer, or wider, or weaker than the other foot. Pointe shoes must be bought for the longer foot, and the shorter foot can be padded differently. Just like you do with your street shoes. A weaker foot must be exercised twice as much than the stronger foot. This gives you more homework, but you can build strength and develop two strong feet. Go to a ballet store during quiet[..]

Thinking that you are simply stuck with the feet you were born with is quite discouraging. Every student is eager to know if her foot can be more flexible, to make pointe work easier, or if she is truly ever going to be able to control her hyper-mobile foot joints and progress without injury. Having the tools you need to do more homework, safely, and more homework that you love and get results from, is being empowered to progress. I think it takes a lot of the mystique out of the undefined "talent" idea. Never be afraid of asking your teacher if you feel like you need some better defined direction in your ballet class. Different ballet moves are more or less difficult for different students. How do you know you are doing things right in ballet class? You count on being told if you are doing something wrong. Not that all teachers correct everyone, every class. You want to show up in the right ballet shoes and pointe shoes, in the right ballet wear, and you want to measure up to all that is expected. Some students are fine with this. I believe that humans all have a part of themselves that is "In reserve". It is a part of us that not everybody sees right upfront, and often we don't either. But as life demands unexpected things of us, "more of us" shows up to meet the demands. Part of this is growing up and learning, but part of it is our own unique energy, or personal power, that comes forth to deal with life in a new and creative way. You can also do this without any help from the arms, by putting your hands on hips or shoulders, and making sure that the turn is coming from your legs, back, and from a grounded demi plie. Holding back a young dance student from pointe work, who has the near-perfect physique, allowing for accurate placement and tidy looking exercises, is sometimes advisable. The extent of muscular strength may not be present yet. Just as important, the maturity and ability to concentrate may not be developed. If so, can you do a series of releves holding a good position, without neck or shoulder strain? If you do lose it, correct your posture, then see if you lose it going into your demi plie.
