Andreas Mitisek

Andreas Mitisek, a native of Vienna, studied harpsichord, organ and conducting at Vienna's Hochschule fur Music and at the Konservatorium der Stadt, where he later joined the faculty. As a harpsichord recitalist he has performed at the Maggio Musical Fiorentino, the Salzburg Festival, and the Vienna Festwochen, and he has performed the harpsichord and organ recital and concerto repertory in cities throughout Europe.

In 1988 he founded the Vienna Neustadt Festival, where he conducted Rossini's Barber of Seville. He was then engaged to conduct Händel's Giulio Cesare at the Vienna Musikverein and Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito at the Vienna Konserthaus.

In 1990 he founded the Vienna Opera Theater, a company dedicated to operas composed in middle and later twentieth century. Significant productions he conducted included Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre, Penderecki's The Devils of Loudun, Birtwistle's The Second Mrs. Kong, Britten's Death in Venice, Reimann's The Castle, and John Adams' Nixon in China.

Maestro Mitisek subsequently debuted at the Vienna Volksoper with Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and at the Berlin Komische Oper with J. Strauss' Die Fledermaus. As a pianist Maestro Mitisek has toured major European festivals with male alto Jochen Kowalski.

In June of 1998, Maestro Mitisek made his American debut with Long Beach Opera's La Indian Queen, and since then he has returned to Long Beach each year, and as well has debuted at the operas of Austin, Philadelphia, Seattle, Vancouver and Honolulu.
